Year 7 and 8 Learning Program

At Years 7 and 8, students engage in a structured and sequenced core curriculum across the eight key learning areas. The program is designed to build strong learning habits and ensure all students understand how they are expected to engage with teaching and learning at Colac Secondary College. Aligned with our whole-school instructional model, classroom learning is explicit, coherent, and responsive to student progress, aiming for 12 months’ growth in 12 months.

Core knowledge and skills are prioritised in every subject. Teachers deliver instruction using evidence-based strategies that maximise engagement and retention. Assessment tasks are designed to measure learning growth and inform instruction, while regular screening assessments identify students who require targeted literacy and numeracy support. A low-variance curriculum ensures all students across all classes access the same high-quality learning experiences.

In addition to the core curriculum, students take part in a broader program that supports their personal development and wellbeing. In Year 7, this includes an orientation camp to help students establish friendships and build confidence in their new environment, as well as dedicated pastoral care sessions focusing on Zones of Regulation and Respectful Relationships. Families are invited to a Year 7 Welcome Evening, creating early connections between home and school.

Year 8 continues to build on these foundations, with an ongoing emphasis on social-emotional learning through the Zones of Regulation and Respectful Relationships program. Students begin to explore future pathways through the Careers: I Explore! program, which introduces them to a range of interests and possibilities for life beyond school.

Alongside these experiences, a rotating suite of art, technology and performance-based subjects allow students to discover new areas of learning and develop the skills and interests that will support success in the senior years and beyond.

Year 9 Learning Program

The Year 9 Learning Program continues to build on the foundations established in the junior years, with a strong emphasis on academic rigour and increasing learner autonomy. Students engage with a core curriculum designed to deepen their knowledge and develop their skills across the key learning areas, while also selecting elective subjects each semester to explore personal interests and potential pathways (see subject selection handbook).

Learning is delivered through explicit, structured teaching that promotes high engagement and responds to individual progress. Assessment tasks are thoughtfully designed to capture student growth and guide future learning. The curriculum maintains a low-variance approach, ensuring consistency in the quality of teaching and learning across all classes.

A key focus in Year 9 is extending students’ literacy capability across all subject areas. Rigorous reading and writing expectations are embedded in each discipline, supporting students to confidently analyse, interpret, and communicate ideas, skills critical for success in the senior years.

In addition to academic learning, students engage in the Careers, Community, and Connection (CCC) program, which supports personal development through a series of structured experiences. These include a personal challenge, a multi-day hike, involvement in community service programs, and reflective learning tasks designed to build confidence, resilience, and social awareness.

Career education is deepened through the I Focus program, the development of individual Career Action Plans, Morrisby vocational profiling, mock interviews, and participation in the Year 9 buddy program. Students take part in REACH Foundation wellbeing workshops and have the opportunity to apply for student leadership roles. An urban camp experience further encourages independence, teamwork, and engagement with the broader world.

Year 10 Learning Program

The Year 10 Learning Program is designed to consolidate the knowledge and skills students have developed throughout their schooling, while preparing them for the demands of the senior years. Students continue to engage with core study areas through a structured and sequenced curriculum, while selecting from a broader range of electives to explore their interests and pathways.

Mathematics pathways are introduced in Year 10, enabling students to select a course that supports or extends their skills based on their readiness and aspirations. This provides targeted preparation for VCE Mathematics and future study options. Students also have the opportunity to accelerate into a VCE subject, based on a clear selection process, capability, and availability.

All students are expected to meet the requirements of core subjects, which remain a compulsory component of their learning. For a detailed overview of offerings and subject selection requirements, refer to the subject selection handbook.

Learner agency continues to grow at Year 10, with students taking greater responsibility for their learning through subject choices, setting academic goals, and evaluating their progress. They are also guided to reflect on their learner strengths and begin to consider ambitious career pathways, building confidence and clarity about their future directions.

Career planning becomes a central feature of the Year 10 experience. All students participate in a dedicated work experience placement, and many begin School-Based Apprenticeships or Training (SBATs) or accelerate into a VCE subject. Career development is further supported through personalised pathway planning sessions and a presentation from the Pat Cronin Foundation, which prompts reflection on values, decision-making, and respectful relationships.

Senior Years Learning Program

The senior years at Colac Secondary College are underpinned by our whole-class instructional model, which uses explicit instruction to ensure clarity, structure, and active engagement in all subjects. This consistent approach supports students to meet the academic demands of their chosen pathways.

Colac Secondary College offers both the Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE) and the VCE Vocational Major (VCE-VM). These pathways may also include access to Vocational Education and Training (VET) programs and School-Based Apprenticeships and Traineeships (SBATs), allowing students to personalise their learning experience.

Students receive individual guidance and support to build a senior program aligned to their interests, strengths, and future aspirations, whether that involves further education, vocational training, or direct entry into the workforce. Through structured learning and clear expectations, students develop the independence, resilience, and capability needed for success beyond school.

Across Years 11 and 12, students participate in tailored experiences that prepare them for life after secondary school. These include study skills workshops delivered in partnership with Deakin University and Success Integrated, and attendance at the Western District Tertiary Information Service (TIS) Roadshow. Through these experiences, students refine independent study habits, explore future options, and consider the skills needed to become autonomous and contributing members of their communities and broader society.
