AVID

“If students are held accountable to the highest standards, and are provided with academic and social support, they will rise to the challenge.”

AVID; Advancement Via Individual Determination is a program that combines highly effective teaching strategies with the skills and knowledge to empower students to take charge of their learning.

AVID’s mission is to prepare all students for university placement, the workplace and success in a global society.

  •  Develops readers and writers

  • Develops deep content knowledge

  • Teaches content-specific strategies for reading, writing, thinking, and speaking

  • Develops habits, skills, and behaviors to use knowledge and abilities

The AVID Instructional Model, WICOR, forms the basis of all lessons at Colac Secondary College. While every teacher is asked to consider how students are learning each of the elements below in every lesson, the main focus for our students is currently on ‘Organisation.’

- Writing

- Inquiry

- Collaboration

- Organisation

- Reading

Organisation is one of the most important parts of the AVID Program. Management of time, energy and learning to set priorities can make the difference between success and failure at school, in further education and in the workplace. Students much learn to plan effectively for academic assignments, organising information and ideas for assessments and projects.

Consistent with the focus on promoting ‘individual determination,’ AVID provides support for the organisation of materials, assignments, assessment, handouts and notes.

The AVID Binder is the central strategy in supporting students to developed this hugely important skill. In 2023, all students 7-12 will be required to have an AVID Binder and take responsibility for its upkeep.
