MATHEMATICS - CORE SUBJECT
DESCRIPTION
At this year level, students are required to demonstrate their understanding of: number, algebra, measurement, geometry, statistics and probability. Students need to be able to fluently use a variety of problem solving strategies and validate their answers.
ACHIEVEMENT STANDARD
By the end of Year 10, students are expected to have successfully completed all set work for the year, including: financial maths, algebra, measurement, linear relationships, trigonometry, statistics, geometry, non-linear relationships and probability.
A variety of teaching strategies will be implemented, providing students with the maximum opportunity to reach their full potential.
Students will be expected to: complete all set work in class for authentication purposes; develop effective study habits by completing homework on a regular basis; and to further develop calculator competencies when solving complex equations.
STUDENTS WILL BE ALLOCATED TO EITHER ADVANCED MATHEMATICS OR GENERAL MATHEMATICS AFTER DISCUSSION WITH STAFF, PARENTS/CARER'S AND STUDENTS.
GENERAL
Mathematics is designed to provide a differentiated curriculum to cater for individual student abilities.
This subject is a pathway to VCE General Mathematics and VCE Foundation Mathematics.
ADVANCED
Mathematics is suitable for students who have achieved excellent results in year 9 mathematics. Students are expected to work at an accelerated pace and complete the entire maths course for Year 10.
This subject is a pathway to VCE Mathematical Methods, VCE Specialist Mathematics and VCE General Mathematics.
